Hymenoplasty, or Hymen Reconstruction, is the surgical repair of the hymen. Dr. Patel and her medical staff are extremely sensitive to women who may be undergoing this procedure due to cultural or social reasons. In some cultures, a torn hymen can affect her marriage prospects, reputation and life. The hymen can tear early in life due to reasons other than intercourse including heavy lifting, riding a bicycle or falling and traumatizing the vulva and vaginal opening.
Hymenoplasty is a simple procedure that will repair a torn hymen. The hymenoplasty is usually a 30 minute procedure and can be done in office using general or local anesthesia. The doctor uses dissolvable stitches to reconnect the skin membrane that once partially covered the opening to the vagina. After a hymenoplasty procedure, the patient can return to work in a day or two. Complete healing takes approximately 6-8 weeks.
